"Saio", the leading role of the Aoi Festival, is an unmarried imperial princess who serves God.
This festival is held once a year rotating between the two shrines, and the one in 2019 will be held by Shimogamo Shrine.
The Saio-dai herself and 40 female participants dip their hands in the water at the Shrine to purify themselves.
Each year, 1 unmarried woman residing in Kyoto is chosen as the "Saio-dai", to represent the "Saio" herself.
Dressed in "Junihitoe", a traditional multi-layered court costume, she is the definition of grace.
It's free to visit, so you definitely won't want to miss out on this.
