There is a well which is open from Yoiyoiyama of Gion Matsuri Festival to Kankosai in a corner of the building of Shijo Karasuma.
It is on the east side of Karasuma-dori Street between Takoyakushi-dori Street and Nishikikoji-dori Street "Mitaraii Well".
It's usually closed by a wooden fence, so many people don't notice it.
Every year, lanterns and shimenawa are decorated on July 14, and the opening of a well takes place early in the morning of the 15th.
After the well opens, you can purify your hands and thirst with the famous water from the well until the 24th.
There is no Yamahoko Junko or Kankosai this year because of Corona disaster, and Mitaraii Well is not open.
The historical Mitaraii Well is the origin of the nearby town name "Tearaimizu-cho".
I hope that the Gion Matsuri Festival will be held safely next year and the well will be opened.
