THE ARISTOCRATS WERE DOING IT TOO!? Mitarashi Festival at Shimogamo-jinja Shrine

Shimogamo-jinja Shrine's "Mitarashi Festival " dating from the Heian period.

This is also called Ashituke Shinji. It is a Shinto ritual to remove sins and impurities by putting your feet on Mitaraike pond in Shimogamo Shrine and pray for perfect health.

It is said that the custom of aristocrats was passed on to the people and has been
continued to this day.

The pond is as deep as an adult's knee, so you need to be careful about your clothes.

Don't forget to bring a towel to wipe your feet.
