Fire ceremony "Agematsu"
There is a famous sacred bonfire in Kyoto "Gozan no okuribi" or "Daimonji", but also there are traditional fire ceremony in the moutainous areas of Kyoto. It's called "Age Matsu" or "Matsu Age". There is a shrine called Atago jinja shrine in Kyoto. The shrine represents protection from fire. So the locals have this ceremony with the wishes and the gratitudes of fire protection and rich harvest and health. We have this ceremony in Ojio area Keihoku on Saturday, August 24th.Local men throw torches into a big wooden container thing(2meters in diameter, 4meters in height.) on 15meters high pole called "Tourogi" with yelling diety's name. It's exciting to have a look. If you want to have a look, better to come with your own car or by taxi.Local transportations are not working on this time. There is parking space at the place.・Ojio Agematsu Date: Saturday, August 24th 20:00〜 Adress: Ojiocho, Keihoku, Ukyo-Ku, Kyoto
Keihoku soul food "Natoo mochi"
Can you guess what's this wooden thing on the photo? This is called "Karausu".We use this tool to thresh grains and pounding mochi(Rice cake) using foot.Using lever rule, this doesn't requied a lot of power to use so even children can use it. Great tool isn't it!?Local NPO "Furusato Keihoku Hokosugijuku" give a mochi making workshop. Members of NPO are senior local masters from Keihoku. They try to carry the local traditions to future generations and vitalizing Keihoku. After pounding mochi, Put natto(fermented soybeans) in it, and put kinako(soybeans powder) around it.Japanese and Korean students joined the workshop this time. They seem to enjoy cultural exchanges.I joined the delicious fun cultural exchange nad had a natto mochi too.Yummy.I had it with brown sugar.Thank you, senior local masters!
I have been wondering one thing for over ten years since I moved to Satoyama Keihoku. My question is "Why do many different flowers grow naturally in my garden with no seeding??"I feel it, especially in the summertime. And finding unknown plants here and there.I was muttering to myself "Why does it grow here!?""Hey, mom! That's so Obvious. Birds, bugs, and winds brought them to here.My son said to me."Ohh that's right!"I remembered I have read a picture book about "seed adventure" when I was little. So I experienced a similar story from my daily life without notice.Nature present. I enjoy them with thanks.
Fantastic fruits "Sarunashi"
My friend Mr. T gave me fruits called "Sarunashi" (Kiwi berry)Sarunashi is a kind of kiwi fruits but without hair on the surface. They grow wild in a cool mountainous area in Japan, China, and Korea. You can buy and grow them.I didn't know this plant until the last summer. This Sarunashi I got is frozen one, has harvested in last Autumn. So I tried frozen Sarunashi which was really tasty. It tastes like a kiwi with lychee.I guarantee you the taste. If you find them try them frozen. It's so beautiful.Harvest of Sarunashi is in September and in October.

River crab hunting
It's been melting weather these days even in the Kyoto mountainous area Keihoku.I have no air-conditioner in my house, my electric fan is working with no break in the day time. But it gets cool in the night time, so I'm glad to live in Keihoku.I didn't want to go out because it's so hot.So I decided to give a self hunting home education to my daughter.Today's game is river crab. They inhabit in the river in front of my house. We went to the river to hunt river crabs.Just ten minutes after started hunting, we hunted three of them. Mission complete! One each for me, my daughter and for my wife.My daughter and my wife have changed their mind so I cooked a crab just for myself. The cooking method is simple deep frying.1. Pour olive oil into the pan2. Warm it up3. put a crab in it Crab died instantly with a deep-fry crackling sound."Wow"My heart was feeling an exitment and a guilty at the same time by looking at.We take some one's life then our life can keep going. Thanks..I served it in the dish and completed!Looking beautiful shape.I put no seasonings on it to enjoy the taste. So I tried it.My first impression was it's very hard. It was much harder than I thought. But I could feel good taste after chewing for a while. It could be a good snack for beer.I do not think that I would want to have them for my daily meals. It's good to know I can eat them for an emergency situation. Please heat well, if you want to try it.Because they may have a parasitic worm inside their body. Please check this article too 「Entomophagy " stink bug"」
On your summer style
Many riders and cyclists often visit Keihoku area.Running on a mountain road with a motorbike or bicycle is fun and it's very refreshing to breathe fresh air.I sometimes go to my office with my scooter Super Cub.An agricultural container is attached on the back of the bike, so it is convenient to put anything in it.The green color of the Super Cub and the yellow color of the container are the best color matching and looking cool! I think. And it's not just cool looking, but also very good on gas. It can run more than 50km with 1 liter of gasoline.Great isn't it!?(The photo is me on Super cub.)I saw this kind of looking person when I visited Vietnam. Looking nice summer style!?Get dressed in your style and come to Keihoku to refresh.
I met an elderly lady in my neighborhood on the way to my office."Hi, how are you?."We had a standing talk for a little while."Let me give you cucumbers. Hey, why don't you have a sit here!? Let's have this popsicle." she said and gave me 2 soda taste popsicles. While eating the popsicle, we had a small talk for about 15 minutes."Let me give you a pumpkin."she said."Oh no, thanks, are you sure? this is too good. so can I have it!? Thank you." (Japanese are funny. We say often "no thanks" first when someone gives you something even we are happy to get the thing. Which is confusing. You can just say thank you as a foreigner.)I also received a wonderful pumpkin.Thank you!I left there and finish small work nearby."Hey, how you doing!? Would you like some tomatoes!?" the neighbor talked to me."If you like, help yourself from the garden." He added.Of course, I picked tomatoes thankfully. And after I got to my office and was having a break outside. The landlady of my office talked to me."Please have these tomatoes"."Oh thank you very much!"What's going on today? I got many vegetables for free. How come locals are givers?Isn't it so nice?We have a lot of givers in Keihoku.I think these warm people make Keihoku a great place to live. What am I giving to the world!?, not much...I respect their giving spirit, and I'll follow their style and become a giver like them someday soon.
