Play in the river
It's awesome living in Keihoku, cos it's very easy to access nature. When children are small, their various senses could be developed by playing in nature.I play with my children in nature as much as possible on the weekend. So I went to the nearby river to catch a fish with my daughter.I could see many fishes from the bridge, but they hide to somewhere when we got in the river. We try to fish them for 30 minutes, but we could catch only one.We stop fishing because I got sucked by mosquitos.I found a Japanese fire belly newt in a puddle nearby. You should wash hands if you touch them. And do not touch your eyes and mouth before you wash.Because they have strong poison called the tetrodotoxin. The same type of poison as blowfish (fugu). But Japanese people used to grill and eat them old days. So they should not have so much poison. We brought back them to the home. But they disappeared away from the bucket. Of course, they can climb up.I go to catch them again if I feel like it.I can go to nature anytime which is awesome.Come and play in a river in Keihoku.Everybody can enjoy!

The fireflies temptation
I was invited to a home party at my friend's house today. The children who were playing outside at night came into the house excited."Hey!! Look, look, I got it."There is a firefly on the palm.Ohh It's beautiful. When I went to the nearby river, some fireflies were frying and dancing. It was chilly outside only 15 degrees because it was raining today. So not many fireflies were flying.(The top photo was taken a few years ago.)Usually, I see a lot of fireflies around this time of year, but I haven't seen a lot of them this year yet. Fireflies come out and fry around 20 o'clock on a warm humid day. When you go to see fireflies, you'd better wear the long sleeves and boots to protect yourself from bugs and vipers in the grass by the river. Please also prepare onion head. The local grandma told me,It is said that people used to bring onion head when locals go to see fireflies.Caught a firefly and put it in the hollow of a onion. It is transparent and beautiful. It's really impressive to see fireflies dancing like crazy. (I mean to see many fireflies flying gently.)How about coming to Keihoku to see fireflies? The spots for fireflies arePlease refer to this map of fireflies in Keihoku. (From the Kyoto City HP)

Looking at the Ayu fishing blog the other day,I talked with the other staff about summer leisure."Camping is very popular these days! Outdoor magazines often feature camping."Our staff Mr. S said. There is a nice campsite in Keihoku! That is "Utsukyo Park".A large outdoor facility where adults and children can relax and enjoy the clear stream of Kamikatsura river surrounded by greenery. There are 21 auto campsites and 7 cottages, and you can also use them for day camping. In fact, the popular campsite is already fully booked on Saturday of July and August. But there are still vacancies on Sundays and weekdays, so please contact them if you want to use there.I asked the staff of the park, "Do you have any recommendations for camping in the coming season?" "The fireflies are about to fly this month, you can see them near the campsite. And in July and August, we will hold a summer limited event to catch ayu (sweetfish), anyone can join the event who are using the campsite.""And our best activity is rafting!Children from 4 years old can experience it with the guidance of an instructor. Small guests visit every evening to my house without notice. They are like a ninja. We don't know when and how they get in. So they are stink bugs."Why stink bugs come in our house?" my 5 years old daughter asked me."Because they like warm places. And they are friends of mine" I answered her.But I pick them up and take them out of the house. After a while, I got to be in charge of stink bug. So my job is taking them out of the house.Sometimes, my daughter tells me "Hey dad, your friends are visiting you again!" This means that "Take them out" by Kyoto style of saying. (Kyoto people say things indirectly.)The other day, so many small friends visited our house and they were having a party in our living room.OK, I give you guys a special transportation service!I made a stink bug catcher (jumbo taxi) by a plastic bottle. This is very easy to make, but it's very useful.Easy to catch them and I don't get the stinky smell on my hands. And the next day, many stink bugs are having a party in the living room again. Then I got an idea!!!I heard insects bar(where you can taste many insects) is a trend in cities. Did you know? This would be the biggest betrayal to my friends, but I decided to eat them.Today I caught 9 stink bugs.Actuary, I have tasted a stink bug in a market in Mexico before. That was not too bad taste, so I didn't have barriers to eating them so much.So I checked the internet how to eat stink bug. And I find someone tried 4 different kinds of stink bugs and checking how the tastes are different. The article says, "Roast quickly to taste and enjoy the real stink bug taste"OK, I did what it says.My kitchen is filled with stimulating exotic smell while I was roasting them. My wife me to the kitchen and said "Ugh, smells so bad!! Ohh No! You are using my favorite fry pan!"So she opened the window fully with irritated.Today's shink bug is a standard kind of stink bug in Japan "Kusagi Kamemushi" smells a bit like coriander.OK, let me taste without seasonings.I put one into my mouth timidly... ・・・!!!!!!!AscensionThat was far away over my imagination. It sent me another world.Exotic smell spreads all over in my mouth. This is not edible at all.It was like torture for me.I still have 8 stink bugs left.I don't want kill animals with no meaning. But it's too hard to eat them all. Then I put some soy souse and sugar and cook again.Taste not good at all even after the seasoning.(But thinking about stink bug, get roasted and been said very bad taste. I am very sorry...)So I googled how to eat stink bug again. Then I find out a standard way to eat stink bug is "taking the smell out of them and cook. This time was not a success, but I will try someday again!Entomophagy is featured for space food and food insecurity measurement. You can get protein efficiently from insect comparing homeothermic animal. It's less environmental impact, and it's economic friendly. One day near future, I think we can buy insect food in the convenience stores soon.Would you try eating bugs?＊NoticeWhen you catch bugs, you'd better check the farm around if the farmers using pesticide. In addition, my mouth and stomach were smelling stink bug for a few hours after eating them. You'd better check the right cooking way if you try.
Miso making workshop
How are you doing? Enjoying spring?I got cold by the temperature gap in my GW.And every I always think my diet over when I get cold. And I try reducing meats and sweets, eat vegetables more, take supplements, try fasting, eat fermented foods more, etc. Rather, I have whatever I like for my soul. Then think over again. For this time my answer is "Have a Miso soup every day".Do you know Miso? Miso is fermented Japanese traditional food made of soy and rice with koji fungus, and salt.(There is wheat miso that made of soy and wheat with koji fungus.)At my house, I use wheat miso made by my mother from Kyushu and the rice miso by my wife from miso making workshop.(Wheat miso is popular in Kyushu and Shikoku.)Miso gets milder and better taste after 6 months by fermentation.(If it's warm fermentation is quicker.)It's really good for health. A little while ago, My wife participated in the Miso making workshop by Jun Hoshino the miso master in the old house cafe "Kikuya Cafe" in Kuroda area of Keihoku.Adults and kids mushing and mixing soy and rice koji together with wishing miso to be good taste and giving love into it.Musicians played live music to make miso good taste. (It seems work somehow.)Wait for a half year of fermentation, then the miso is ready to eat. When I eat the miso, I would remember everyone's face at the workshop and remember today's delightful memory. It's fun like a time capsule. Why don't you try making miso? You can buy very good taste miso in Woody Keihoku made by Yamaguni Sakigake center's local gramas.-----Kikuya cafehttps://www.facebook.com/kikuyacafe/Yamaguni Sakigake centerhttp://sakigake.net/
Kyoto Keihoku Trail Running Competition
I have participated in the Kyoto Keihoku Trail Running Competition on Saturday, April 20th. Running 18km course with mountains and valleys.I could finish the run with a single-lens reflex camera in my hand. (Almost I walked.)Living in Keihoku, there are mountains around my house, so I can run anytime. But I'm a bit too lazy to run."I like nature and want to exercise, I know that exercise is good. But I can not get started easily. "For those who like me, I would definitely recommend participating in a trail running competition. If you participate in the competition, everyone is also doing the best, that makes you do your best. It will be a good opportunity to start the exercise. And of course, it feels very good.Breezing in the fresh air, running like a wild animal. It was the best.I felt like I'm going back into the wild. The panorama shot from the paragliding ground along the course. It's so beautiful! The Keihoku trail course is always open for you.You can get the trail course map(Kyoto north edition) in Woody Keihoku. The price is 500 yen. It is sold in various places of Kyoto city.
