Primitive gathering life "torreya-nuts"
I think in the period of hunting-and-gathering age, people must have had great wisdom to live with nature harmoniously. When they walk in a forest, they can find the necessary things easily and knowing where to find good foods and everything. And this wisdom was passed on to a decade ago. But now we are losing it.I harvested torreya-nuts that should have been eating by human beings form the gathering age. It means I can teste the ancient.Torreya-tree is very rare nowadays. It takes a long time for them to grow, so that is really strong wood and expensive. That's why we don't have that tree much anymore. A lot of them have been cut.The inside part of the nuts is edible. You can get really good oil from this nut. good smell.Nuts have a strongly alkaline taste, so I have to roast them to eat.We finished peering the skin off this time.I'm gonna try roasting and tasting. And I will share on this blog soon.
The way to enjoy Satoyama at Farm stay "Goemon" ①
I think the attraction of Keihoku is that traditional Satoyama life still remains. Then, how can we enjoy that!?As an answer to this question, I would like to introduce you to an accommodation facility 'Goemon' where you rent an old private house.I had an interview with the owner of Goemon Mr. Masanori Tanaka and Mrs. Nami Tanaka. As the name Goemon suggests, you can take a bath in Goemonburo (a type of bathtub) heated with firewood.I think it's very rare to bathe in the Goemonburo that will warm you up to the bone.(What you can see in the middle of the picture is the door of Goemonburo's stove.)The attraction is not only Goemonburo. If you stay at Goemon, it covers all the keywords (Irori fireplace, okudosan (fire cooking stove), firewood cutting, firewood stove, Goemon bath, harvesting experience, cooking experience, wells, etc.) country experience that many people imagine. It's fun to stay overnight without meals, rent a house with family and friends, and spend a relaxing time in private.Kitchenware and tableware are prepared so that you can bring in ingredients and cook by yourself. You can feel as if you have a villa of an old private house. If I think so, it's much cheaper to stay at Goemon than a villa.Of course, you can book meals. You can eat homegrown new rice by Mr. and Mrs. Tanaka from the middle of September. So it's a new rice season.Their farm is just one min walk from Goemon, so you can experience harvesting vegetables. Freshly picked vegetables are the best.Have you ever eaten rice cooked with a fire stove? It's really tasty.I recommend you to have a BBQ at the Irori fireplace for dinner.Isn't it great that you can make a charcoal BBQ with your friends inside the house? You don't have to worry about mosquitoes like outside. They will prepare the meat from Tokiwa meat shop, they only sale Japanese A4 or A5 black beef (wagyu) that we introduced on this blog before. In the winter season, the irori fireplace is great for hotpot using seasonal vegetables.Nami-san is a really good cook.If you stay more than 2 nights, they will serve you a special secret menu by Nami-san.Okudosan's okonomiyaki. It's exquisite.Nami-san is from Osaka, so the taste of Okonomiyaki is real. You can enjoy home cooking according to four seasons. This is freshly fried skewers."What are you going to have next? Please have some more." Nami-san says. It's a happy time to serve freshly fried skewers on a plate. It feels good to be in a daze in this kind of life.Nami-san is also a potter, so you can buy her works.Let me introduce you to my friend from Venus. There is an active well. I will introduce more about Goemon in the latter part on the next blog.----------Goemonaddress2 Kefe, Shimokumada-cho, Keihoku, Ukyo Ward, Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture 601 0272Free transport to Shuzan Bus Terminal (Parking available)Tel 075-855-1700mobile 090-8932-8269HP https://www.banja-kyoto.com/goemon
Got good harvest of figs
Rice harvesting has started in Satoyama that is a sign of Autumn beginning.I harvested figs from my backyard. We never had a good harvest of figs. Crows eat them all usual years. But this year, a fig tree beer a lot of fruit as that can share with crows. It's super organic. In other word, we did not take care of it.Surprisingly great harvest.I was wondering what can I do with a lot of figs. Then I got a request from my family "we want you to make them jam" OK, good idea!Ingredient: figs 750-800g, sugar 250 - 300g, lemon juice 3-4 tablespoon. (I put honey instead of half of the sugar)① Peel off fig skin. Tip: Easier peel from the top.② Cut figs into bite-size. (It's ok to be bigger)③ Put cut figs and sugar and lemon juice into a pan.④ Leave it for 30mins. Then the water comes out from figs.④Simmer it by low to medium heat. After simmering about 30mins. It became like this.⑤Stir to check. If you think it is a jam. then finish! Ta-dah!I tasted it.....Yes, it's fantastic! If you get a lot of figs.Try making a jam! It's fun and yummy!
New harvest rice arriving soon!
It's been hot last a few days like summer came back. This weekend I saw many people harvesting rice in Keihoku. We have beautiful water form upper Katsura river so Keihoku rice tastes beautiful.Mostly farmers use a combine harvester to harvest rice.It combined rice harvesting and threshing. When I grow rice before I harvested by hand and took us for 3 days to just harvest by five of us.But combine harvester could do this for just 2 hours. It's hundreds times faster than hands.I like the classic style but if everybody does that way, the price of rice would be double or triple or more. I heard natural sun-dried rice has a bit better taste. But it takes time and difficult to keep the quality.Another 2 weeks、Keihoku rice would be available on markets. We could find them in woody Keihoku. Please try it so good!---------------道の駅 ウッディー京北 road station Woody Keihoku1-1 Kamiterada, Shuzan-cho, Keihoku, Ukyo-ku, Kyoto-shi postal code 601-0251tel 075-852-1700open hours 9:00 to 18:00https://fuw.jp/woody/
Japanese new summer sweets "kuzu ice pop"
It's getting cooler but it's still hot.So Let me introduce "kuzu ice pop" form Kameya Hirokiyo cake shop.(Kuzu is arrowroot)Kuzu is used for Kuzu-mochi and Kuzuyu(Hot drink). This unique Kuzu popsicle which doesn't melt and fall. But why it doesn't melt!?Because it's made of Kuzu (arrowroot). This time I bought blueberry taste and sweet potato taste.Blueberry one is used Keihoku local blueberry.I had a "sweet potato taste". It was very yummy. It got the gentle sweetness of sweet potatoes and jiggly and chewy texture. My colleague had a blueberry one.He said"So good! This texture of frozen blueberry and chewy texture is a very good combination."There is soda taste too. Please try the Japanese new ice pop.
I visited a friend's house in a Yamaguni Keihoku because I had a little business."Hey, how you going!?"My friend said,"There's a giant salamander in the ditch behind the rice field.""What? ARE YOU SERIOUS!?"So I was guided to the waterway behind the house."WOW!"A giant salamander was in the ditch as it lives there normally like a being in their living room. For the past few days, there have been several giant salamanders in the friend's pond in the garden, which is connected to the waterway behind. As you know, Japanese giant salamanders are a nationally protected species in Japan.I have an image of their living in the upper stream, but recently I've heard about seeing giant salamanders in Kamogawa river Kyoto city central. Most of the Japanese giant salamanders in Kyoto are crossed with Chinese giant salamanders, and native species are on the verge of extinction.Even in Keihoku which is in the upper reaches of Katsura River, crossbreeding of Japanese giant salamanders is advanced, and this one is highly likely to be a crossbreed.I'm sorry to bother you, but I am touching you.As expected, it was slimy. In fact, Japanese giant salamanders have a strong biting force, so if you find them, you should not touch them. They could bite your pinky off. Japanese giant salamanders are called "Sansho uo" in Japanese. (Uo means fish.)Japanese mountain pepper is called "Sansho"When they get angry, they secrete whitish liquid, which is similar to the smell of Japanese mountain pepper, and that is the origin of the name. They are eaten as a precious protein source in mountain villages in the past.(Can not do anymore.)It sounds delicious for me. I heard taste like between fish and chicken.Of course, I curbed my desire to eat it.On my way home, I dropped in Woody Keihoku farmer's market. And I bought Japanese mountain pepper powder instead of eating salamander.Japanese pepper from Keihoku tastes really good and it got a beautiful flavor. The price is 850 JPY for 15g.It's a sundry handpicking organic one.Try it and feel the taste of salamanders!Michinoeki Woody KEihokuPostal code601-0251 Adress 1-1 Kamiterada, Shuzan-cho, Ukyo-Ku, Kyoto-cityTel 075-852-1700Opening hours 9 to 18https://fuw.jp/woody/
Keihoku soul food "Natoo mochi"
Can you guess what's this wooden thing on the photo? This is called "Karausu".We use this tool to thresh grains and pounding mochi(Rice cake) using foot.Using lever rule, this doesn't requied a lot of power to use so even children can use it. Great tool isn't it!?Local NPO "Furusato Keihoku Hokosugijuku" give a mochi making workshop. Members of NPO are senior local masters from Keihoku. They try to carry the local traditions to future generations and vitalizing Keihoku. After pounding mochi, Put natto(fermented soybeans) in it, and put kinako(soybeans powder) around it.Japanese and Korean students joined the workshop this time. They seem to enjoy cultural exchanges.I joined the delicious fun cultural exchange nad had a natto mochi too.Yummy.I had it with brown sugar.Thank you, senior local masters!
Fantastic fruits "Sarunashi"
My friend Mr. T gave me fruits called "Sarunashi" (Kiwi berry)Sarunashi is a kind of kiwi fruits but without hair on the surface. They grow wild in a cool mountainous area in Japan, China, and Korea. You can buy and grow them.I didn't know this plant until the last summer. This Sarunashi I got is frozen one, has harvested in last Autumn. So I tried frozen Sarunashi which was really tasty. It tastes like a kiwi with lychee.I guarantee you the taste. If you find them try them frozen. It's so beautiful.Harvest of Sarunashi is in September and in October.
