Come on garlic!
My vegetable garden got attack by deer and wild boars last year.At the end of last year, I was wishing "I want to grow my vegetable." After a few days,A farmer friend of mine gave me some huge garlic and said "The buds are out, so you can plant it." she quickly put soil into a pot and planted garlic in it, and gave it to me as a present.Wow, I gotta my little vegetable garden. Thank you!Deer won't be able to eat this garlic. After leaving it for about three weeks, I wondered what happened to the garlic and found it sprouting from the soil! yes!!It seems to be planted in autumn, but if there is garlic sprouting in your kitchen, I think it will grow if you plant it now. Please give it a shot.I'm ready to harvest! Come on garlic!!
A little different service station "Keihoku oil"
It's been very warm this winter. It hasn't much snowed in Keihoku yet.Usually, we have snow in early December, so I change tires from summer to winter tires before that, but I missed the timing and finally changed tires yesterday. It never happened after I moved Keihoku.Global warming seems clearly progressing.I usually change tires by myself, but I had no time, and my mind was a bit too busy to DIY. I went to Keihoku oil the service station to change the tires.I went there at the last minute in the evening without booking for tire change, but they are kindly accepted my request.Owner Mr. Uemura "It is cold waiting outside, so please relax in the break area."When I entered the break area, I found the guitars are hanging on the wall. It feels more like being an owner's hobby room than a break area.I heard that they have a music session with their friends sometimes after closing the shop.I want to join the session sometimes. This is a hunting jacket hanging in the room. Mr. Uemura runs a gas station, and he does farming in summer and hunting deer and wild boar in winter. He and his friend are thinking to make a small official slaughterhouse for themselves this spring.Mr. Uemura said, "my friends of restaurants' owners asked me to sell venison for them, so I decided to build a slaughterhouse. I think it is the role of a hunter to thank the life of animals and take their meat as much as possible."I think his idea and style are cool.Enjoying life in nature while doing proper business. It's a very good balance.I think this is KEIHOKU Style.Large companies have started to lift the ban on side jobs. Don't you think the way of his work style cool!? Why don't you do farming and hunting on your side business? When you come to Keihoku, it might be interesting to ask Mr. Uemura about hunting while refueling. When I was chatting with Ms. Uemura, while tires are getting changed. It was finished very quickly. I expected it takes longer. OK, you are professional! Incomparable with my work.I always change it while I'm freezing, so I appreciate that.Refilled up the tank, replaced the tires, talked with Mr. and Mrs. Uemura, and my heart filled up.Thank you very much.-------Keihoku oil(servise station)1 Shimokawara, Shimonaka-cho Keihoku, Ukyo-ku, Kyoto 075-854-0402
Natural beauty item "Yuzu lotion"
I got a lot of yuzu pomace the other day.I can still use them.Yuzu has a nice flavor so I put it in alcohol such as vodka and drink it like a cocktail. On the night we got yuzu pomace. My wife was doing something in the kitchen. So I checked what she was doing. She was busy taking out the seeds of yuzu.I asked my wife "What are you doing?"And she answered "I'm making yuzu body lotion. I can make a really good lotion by yuzu seeds. It will be a kind of syrupy lotion that can keep moist of skin and it's fragrant. I heard that the seeds contain pectin that can keep moist of skin."Yuzu body lotion making process is simple: just soak the yuzu seeds in a white liquor. After about a week, the ingredients of the seeds will get dissolved in the white liquor. Why don't you try making yuzu lotion to get a natural beauty!?(Please do not use this if you develop skin conditions or if you have skin abnormalities. so please try it at your own risk.)
Yatsura shrine amulet
The other day, a neighbour brought a new amulet provided by a local shine for next year. Our local shrine is Yatsura Shrine for Satoyama design's office. We enshrined the amulet in the Shinto altar of the office.(There is Shinto altar in many office in Japan.)We got two amulets, Yatsura Shrine and Amaterasu omikami.I think our guardian deity protected us well. We would be able to end this year without any problems. Thanks! This is the Yatsura shrine. There are several shrines in the shrine. We enshrine many Shinto deities and have a shrine for each deity. (Main shrine is shared by some deities.)there is also a special shrine called Ushi-jinja that enshrines the spirits of farm animals. An old house in Keihoku had a room for cattle. Cattles were very important for local people like a family because they helped farm work. Yatsura shrine is about 10mins walk from the Keihoku JR bus terminal. It would be a nice walk.------Yatsura Shrine28 Shiroyama,Shuzan-cho, Keihoku, Ukyo-ku, Kyoto City
loofah eco-friendly sponge
My farmer friend gave me loofahs.I brought them back to my office and put them on the desk, it looked like modern art and cool.Nature makes the most beautiful shapes.they look like a face when seen from the cross-section of the round slice.Recently, the microplastic pollutions of the ocean appear in the news more as Starbucks coffee stopped using plastic straws. Microplastics are released in large quantities after washing clothes made of chemical fibers such as fleece. The trouble is that microplastics are so small that they pass through the sewage filters.Fish and other maline life eat plastics, and we humans are eating them and get plastics. With this loofah sponge, you don't have to worry about microplastic from the kitchen or bathroom.Of course, it is very comfortable to use.I think the old lifestyle like Satoyama lifestyle has many hints for solving social issues. I like new technology, but I think the traditional wisdom of Satoyama is wonderful. It is exactly Satoyama chishin. How about using a loofah sponge instead of plastic sponge?
winter solstice custom
It's winter solstice today, called Touji in Japanese. We have customs for the day, eating pumpkin and yuzu and tahking a yuzu bath. Yuzu is a citrus fruit and it has a strong aroma smell. My wife cooked pumpkin and yuzu dishes at home. This is a simmered pumpkin with soy sauce and sugar. This is daikon radish with yuzu miso dish.Yum, yum.Yuzu and pumpkin are very nutritious they are healthy. After dinner, we had a yuzu bath.A yuzu bath warms the body up and soothes dry skin caused by the cold of winter. This winter has been warmer than usual, but it seems to get as cold as usual at the end of the year.Let's eat nutritious food to get ready for the cold and survive the winter!
Making quince syrup
Is this winter a warm winter?Of course, the temperature falls in the morning and evening in Satoyama. We have no snow yet for this winter. That is very rare for Keihoku. But the air is dry. I had a sore throat and cough. My grandmother got some quinces from a neighbor.Grandma said to me "I think you can eat this." When I peeled it, the smelled so good. But the fruit was so hard, I wonder if it's edible or not, so I googled it.Google says "It is hard and tastes very bitter, so it is not suitable for eating raw."Ohh, grandma...I'm glad I didn't eat it (laughs).Quince seems to have various medicinal properties that good for cough and sore throat. I decided to make quince honey syrup.Cut quince into small pieces.Put the quince seeds in a tea bag and put it in the bottom of the bottle. In fact, quince seeds have high medicinal properties. Then, put the chopped quince and pour honey. It's done! very easy. The amount of honey was not enough. I'm gonna add some honey later.Next morning, I drunk it with hot water. Thanks quince, my throat has got better. Please give it a try if you get a quince.
Wood chopping exercise
I use firewoods for the bath boiler and for a woodstove in the room, so I stock firewood all year round. That's why I chop firewoods when I feel like.Have you ever chopped firewood ??It's a good exercise to chop the wood, and it feels good if it split well.Since yoga has a pose of chopping wood, it should be good for physically and mentally. It may be inconsistent with living with firewood, but I'm an efficientist, I think it's the best exercise is to not just maintain health but to live.Especially in the winter, the body gets warmed up.Take aim.Huh!!By the way, I took the photos myself with the self-timer. LolIf someone Looked at the scene of taking my self-portrait, I think I was looked a bit silly. This is my ax.Now I can use it well, but when I was a beginner I broke the handle of it with a bad swing.I fixed it using the broken umbrella handle. It has been almost two years since the fixing, but it is still OK. It doesn't look pretty, but I'm happy with it. because I want to use things as long as I can.You can experience wood chopping in farm guesthouses in Keihoku. So if you have a chance, try it. It's real fun.
