Forestry is indispensable, whenever we describe Keihoku, and the history goes far back to more than 1,000 years ago.
In some area of Keihoku, there living descendants of people who were ordered to settle down here and grow trees for construction of the old capital by emperor family during 7th century.
It was not until we had moved to Keihoku that we met 'lumberjacks'. They are all big, loud, drink a lot, and very wild.
Their mountains are really steep and dangerous as they are not of course organized for hiking. The slightest mistake could result in a fatal accident.
The sight of these cut down trees might seem shocking in a way.
But those trees were planted many generations ago, and since then they have been cared for many years.
If people don't care for them properly, the mountain will be all gone to pot, and trees which grow too much cause land sliding.
After they cut trees, they plant new trees for another 100-year generation.
One lumberjack from Keihoku write his blog about forestry, and it's very funny and interesting.
